Nerve Stimulation Technology to Treat Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a significant issue that impacts an individual’s quality of life and increases risk of morbidity. For patients suffering from sleep apnea who are not candidates for continuous positive airway pressure therapy, newly-available nerve stimulation technology has been shown to be an effective and safe treatment option.

Patrick Strollo, MD, FCCP, medical director of the UPMC Sleep Medicine Center, was the lead investigator of a trial that tested the efficacy of a new nerve stimulation device. He discusses the trial’s positive results, and how it may potentially transform the way sleep apnea is treated.
